Project to understand the state of sanitation in 3 towns in Karnataka

A project was undertaken to understand the state of sanitation in 3 towns in Karnataka. Special emphasis was made on the role played by the informal sector – like honeysuckers and ring makers. Recommendations were made for the way forward.

Citizen Science and Lakes

While citizen activism is high in Bengaluru, people are many times at a loss to be able to contribute effectively. Keeping this in mind a Citizen Science and Lakes programme was envisaged to try and set up instrumentation to continuously monitor the water quality and quantity inflows and outflows from the lake. Creation of an illustrated manual on how to set up toilets and how to do rainwater harvesting

Communication material was developed to convey the methodology for setting up a rainwater harvesting system in a village as well as to set up a twin leach pit toilet in rural areas in Karnataka. The final output is an illustrated hand book.

Integrated urban water management in Koramangala, Bangalore

Koramangala is one of the pleasant neighbourhoods in Bengaluru. It is however beset with water issues – flooding as well as lack of water in summer. A project was carried out to understand the water sources, supply mechanisms and wastewater management in this neighbourhood. The potential for rainwater harvesting as well as rejuvenation of a lake in the neighbourhood was also studied and presented to the community. Support was also provided to take forward some of the proposed interventions.

Water literacy and rainwater harvesting implementation in 6 schools in Devanahalli

Devanahalli is a town towards the north of Bengaluru. It is a considerably drier area and the water tables are very low. The government schools in the area suffer due to lack of water – for both sanitation as well as drinking/cooking purposes. Rainwater harvesting was implemented in some schools by BIOME with funds raised from corporate CSR. Water awareness and educational sessions were also conducted to highlight to the children the need to use water wisely.

Creation of a website urbanwaters.in to share information on the needs and ways to do water management

In order to disseminate knowledge on water conservation in urban areas, a website http://bengaluru.urbanwaters.in was created. This website provides information on various water resources. Audio/video as well as written manuals have been provided to encourage citizens to implement some of the simpler best practices themselves or with help from local plumbers. The information material has been created in multiple languages. Case studies have also been provided so that people can learn from their neighbours.
